The President of the Constitutional Court, Dainius Žalimas, has administered the oath of the President of the Republic, Gitanas Nausėda

12-07-2019

At a solemn sitting of the Seimas, the President of the Constitutional Court, Dainius Žalimas, administered the oath of the President of the Republic, Gitanas Nausėda.

After giving an explanatory statement on the procedure for administering the oath of the President of the Republic, Dainius Žalimas administered the oath of office of the President of the Republic, confirmed it by his signature, and congratulated the President of the Republic, Gitanas Nausėda:

“Your Excellency, President Gitanas Nausėda, taking the oath of the President of the Republic is not only a formal or symbolic act. Every word of the oath derives from the Constitution and obliges you to act solely in the interests of the Nation and the State of Lithuania, be faithful to the Republic of Lithuania and the Constitution, to conscientiously fulfil the duties of your office, and to be equally just to all.

The oath of office of the President of the Republic reflects the main values that the Nation associates with the President of the Republic. This oath differs from the oaths taken by other most important state officials, since, under the Constitution, only the President of the Republic takes the oath to the special entity – the Nation, to whom sovereignty belongs.

The act of taking the oath of the President of the Republic is moreover constitutionally significant because, by swearing the oath to the Nation, the head of state publicly and solemnly assumes the obligation to act only in the way that the oath obliges him or her, as well as the obligation not to violate this oath under any circumstances.

Your Excellency, the President of the Republic, I wish you to work successfully towards strengthening the State of Lithuania as the constitutionally consolidated common good of all society – united, strong, and modern Lithuania that respects human rights and the rule of law and is a welfare state with the western geopolitical orientation. I wish you to foster the standing of our state in the international community, to honestly serve the Homeland, pluralist democracy, and the well-being of Lithuanian people! I wish you perseverance and success while holding the responsible and honourable office of the head of state!”

Stating that, “under Article 82 of the Constitution, from this moment, Gitanas Nausėda assumes all powers of the head of state and takes up the office of the President of the Republic”, Dainius Žalimas handed the act on taking the oath of the President of the Republic to the Speaker of the Seimas, Viktoras Pranckietis, for retaining it at the Seimas.
