Congratulation by the President of the Constitutional Court, Dainius Žalimas, on the occasion of the Day of the Constitution
Today is the 27th anniversary of the Constitution of the Republic of Lithuania, adopted by referendum by the people. Over this number of years, we have been able to rejoice to live in a free and independent state, which respects the supremacy of the Constitution and the rule of law, seeks to follow the principles of democracy, and ensures the possibilities of protecting the rights of every person.
However, we must not forget that freedom is inseparable from the diligent observance of the collectively adopted laws and, first of all, the Constitution, as well as from respect for others, openness to the world, and the courage and determination of each citizen to act.
It is not a coincidence that the Constitution begins with the words “the People of Lithuania”. This means that it is the People, not the government elected by them, who have chosen their own path and have undertaken the obligation to protect the values and principles enshrined in the Constitution of their country. Let us, therefore, be brave, wise, and tolerant, yet intolerant of any dictatorship, even the dictatorship of the majority, since the Constitution protects everyone equally.
